Active Reading (Reading Comprehension): Students will read and understand 4-6 novels, refer to examples when drawing inferences, determine a theme, summarize, and describe in depth a character, setting, or event in the novel while drawing on specific details (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions) and figurative language (e.g., simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification). |

Essay Development (Writing): Students will be writing multi-paragraph essays that provide an introductory paragraph, introduce a central idea clearly with a topic sentence, include supporting paragraphs with concrete details and examples, link ideas using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, for example, also) and conclude with a paragraph that summarizes the points. Students will be practicing the three writing genres (opinion pieces, informative texts and narratives). |

Vocabulary Acquisition: Students will integrate knowledge of individual words to enhance their writing, apply knowledge of word origins, derivations, synonyms, antonyms, and distinguish and interpret words with multiple meanings. |

Grammar: For the grammar module of the class, students will learn to identify and use regular and irregular verbs, adverbs, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, participial and prepositional phrases. |

| is designed to provide instruction aligned with the California's Common Core State Standards including extensive emphasis on word problems and critical thinking involving estimation, statistics, probability, data analysis and geometry. Students will understand the place value of whole numbers and decimals to two decimal places and how whole numbers and decimals relate to simple fractions. This group class involves lectures, weekly quizzes, a mid-term and final exam. Homework will be assigned. |
