Active Reading (Reading Comprehension): Students will read and understand 4-5 novels, describe the overall structure of a story, acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, and compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story. |

Writing: Students will learn to write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also) to connect opinion and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. |

Vocabulary: Students will use the knowledge of individual words to enhance their writing, learn the meaning of simple prefixes and suffixes (e.g., over-, un-, -ing, -ly) and identify simple multiple-meaning words. |

Grammar: For the grammar module of the class, students will learn to identify and correctly use various parts of speech, including nouns, verbs and adjectives. |
Some book purchases will be necessary. Students can expect homework and weekly quizzes. Grades will be given. |

Students will understand place value and number relationships in addition and subtraction and they will use simple concepts of multiplication. They will also classify shapes and see relationships among them by paying attention to their geometric attributes. This group class involves lectures, weekly quizzes, a mid-term and final exam. Homework will be assigned. |

They will also classify shapes and see relationships among them by paying attention to their geometric attributes. Practice is everything. Homework and periodic assessment tests will be assigned. |
