Reading Comprehension: Students will read and understand 3-4 novels and learn to draw upon a variety of comprehension strategies (i.e., generating and responding to essential questions—who, what, when, where and how, making predictions, and using context to resolve ambiguities about word and sentence meanings) to demonstrate understanding of the story's central message. |

Writing: For the writing component of the class, students will learn to write opinion pieces, informative or explanatory compositions and narratives. In all forms of writing, they will introduce the topic, include some details and/or facts about the topic and provide some sense of closure. |
Students can expect homework and weekly quizzes. Grades will be given. |

is aligned with the California's Common Core State Standards emphasizing word problems (problem solving techniques and the application of mathematics) and preparing students by building a sound mathematical foundation through rigorous practice and regular improvement. Students will understand and use the concepts of ones and tens in the place value number system along with adding and subtracting small numbers with ease. They will measure with simple units and describe data, analyze and solve simple word problems. Homework and periodic assessment tests will be assigned. |
