Reading Comprehension: Students will read and understand 2 novels and learn to draw upon a variety of comprehension strategies (i.e., generating and responding to essential questions–who, what, when, where and how, making predictions, and using context to resolve ambiguities about word and sentence meanings) to demonstrate understanding of the story's central message. |

Writing: For the writing component of the class, students will learn to write opinion pieces, informative or explanatory compositions and narratives. In all forms of writing, they will introduce the topic, include some details and/or facts about the topic and provide some sense of closure. |
Some book purchases will be necessary. Students can expect homework and weekly quizzes. Grades will be given. |

is designed to provide instruction aligned with California's COMMON CORE State Standards including extensive emphasis on word problems and critical thinking involving estimation, statistics, probability, data analysis and geometry. Students will understand place value and number relationships in addition and subtraction and they will use simple concepts of multiplication. They will also classify shapes and see relationships among them by paying attention to their geometric attributes. This group class involves lectures, weekly quizzes, a mid-term and final exam. Homework will be assigned. |
