| The BASIC WRITING FOR THE 5th GRADE is a small group class that provides instruction aligned with the California's Common Core State Standards in the following areas: |

Active Reading (Reading Comprehension): Students will read and understand 4-6 novels, quote accurately from a text when drawing inferences, determine a theme including how characters in a drama respond to challenges, summarize, compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story drawing on specific details (e.g., how characters interact), and describe the function and effect of common literary devices (e.g., imagery, metaphor, symbolism). |

Fundamentals of Effective Writing: Students will be writing clear, coherent, and focused essays that introduce a topic clearly, develop the topic with quotations, link ideas using phrases and clauses (e.g., in contrast, especially, consequently, specifically), use precise language, and provide a conclusion. Students will be practicing the three writing genres (opinion/persuasive, informative, and narrative) to include at least 500–700 words in each composition. |

Vocabulary Development: Students will integrate knowledge of individual words to enhance their writing, use their knowledge of word origins and word relationships, as well as historical and literary context clues, to determine the meaning of specialized vocabulary and explain the figurative and metaphorical use of words in context. |

Grammar: For the grammar module of the class, students will learn to identify and use verbs that are often misused, modifiers, prepositional phrases, appositives, independent and dependent clauses. |
| CAASPP test preparation will be integrated to formally prepare students specifically emphasizing the areas of reading comprehension, sentence structure, writing strategies and vocabulary. Some book purchases will be necessary. Students can expect homework and weekly quizzes. Grades will be given. | |

| In BARUN ACADEMIC CENTER'S APPLIED MATH FOR THE 5th GRADE, students will increase their facility with the four basic arithmetic operations applied to fractions, decimals, and positive and negative numbers. They will learn and use common measuring units to determine length and area and learn and use formulas to determine the volume of simple geometric figures. Students will learn the concept of angle measurement and use a protractor and compass to solve problems along with learn to use grids, tables, graphs, and charts to record and analyze data. This group class is designed to provide instruction aligned with the California's Common Core State Standards including extensive emphasis on word problems and critical thinking involving estimation, statistics, probability, data analysis and geometry. This class involves lectures, weekly quizzes, a mid-term and final exam. CAASPP test preparation will be integrated in the weekly lectures. Homework will be assigned. |

Ratios and Proportional Relationships: Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems (by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations). |

The Number System: Fluently add, subtract, and divide multi-digit numbers and decimals using the standard algorithm for each operation. Understand ordering and absolute value of rational numbers. Solve real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in all four quadrants of the coordinate plane. |

Expressions and Equations: Evaluate expressions at specific values of their variables. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. |

Geometry: Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. |

Statistics and Probability: Develop understanding of statistical variability. Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots. |
